The Peak District is known for being one of the most beautiful natural areas in the country! The cliffs, fields, and streams are enough to bring people from all over to explore.
However, there are also plenty of things to see and do outside the Peak District! All you need is suitable walking boots, a picnic, and a camera to make memories that will last you a lifetime. Here are a handful of things to do near the Peak District, and places you’ll likely want to visit for time to come.
Visit The Linacre Reservoirs
These stunning reservoirs were built between 1855 and 1904 and collectively hold more than 240 million gallons of water! You can even walk over the Upper Reservoir using the boardwalk.
However, you should go for more than just the history. The spectacular scenery draws people from all over every year. The surrounding woods are filled with bluebells in the spring and golden-leafed paths in the autumn.
There’s a beautiful picnic site, disabled access, accessible toilets, and plenty of spaces for your dog to run around! Above all else, the typical peace and tranquility of the area can be felt all around the three reservoirs.
Trek Around Ecclesall Woods
Ecclesall Woods could be the place for you if you’re looking for a bit more of an immersive experience. Out of all the places to visit near the Peak District, this is one of our absolute favourites – and we know the area well!
You can take the time to explore the stunning woods in all of their natural beauty alone, or you can always spend time at the Ecclesall Woods Discovery Centre.
In the centre, you will find lots of public events throughout the year (though do be sure to check on the dates and times before you go!), craft workshops, and plenty of other family activities! There is even an Abbeydale Miniature Railway for children to ride on – great fun for all the family.
And, when you’ve done exploring, you can sit back and relax at the snack bar for tea and a biscuit.
Head to Graves Park
Animal lovers will love Graves Park! The stunning area is well-maintained and blooming with beautiful flowers and plants all around, and it is also the home of plenty of wildlife worth spotting.
The animals here are famously well looked after and doted on by visitors! From goats and ducks to Highland cattle and more, you won’t get bored seeing these amazing animals living their best lives. Entry is completely free, and it is a great place to visit alone or with the whole family.
Spend a Day at The Longshaw Estate
The Longshaw Estate is, with families, one of the most popular areas to visit near the Peak District. The area covers nearly 1,600 acres of land with stunning landscapes, woods, parkland, moors, quarries, and more.
There is a wonderful visitor centre that sometimes hosts public events that are worth checking out, too. The tea rooms here have excellent refreshments and home-baked food that’s locally sourced.
Along your walks, you will come across ducks, deer, and various bird species that provide the perfect music for your journey!
Cycle Holmebrook Valley Park
If you’re feeling a wee bit more adventurous, why not cycle around Holmebrook Valley Park? Of course, you will get beautiful views of the valley itself, rife with stunning wildlife, but you can also explore the wilderness around it. You’ll likely come across a few dog walkers, cyclists, and joggers on your way!
There are also play areas for children, perfectly positioned picnic tables, and even football pitches for impromptu games!
There is disabled access to the park, public toilets, and an excellent spot for a cup of tea and a piece of cake.
Relax at the Tickled Trout
Finally, when all of your adventures are done, you’ll surely be ready for a nice drink and a hot meal! Head straight over to the Tickled Trout. Our quintessential British pub is the perfect place for gourmet food, made with locally sourced, fresh ingredients – and for top-notch ale and wine, with a wonderful local atmosphere.
